Volcán Santiaguito is an active stratovolcano located in Guatemala, near the larger Volcán de Santa María. It emerged in 1922 as a lava dome and has since been characterized by frequent eruptions, primarily explosive in nature. The volcano is part of the Sierra Madre mountain range and is known for its continuous volcanic activity.
The eruptions of Santiaguito produce ash plumes and pyroclastic flows, which can pose risks to nearby communities. The surrounding area is monitored by the Instituto Nacional de Sismología, Vulcanología, Meteorología y Estudios Territoriales (INSIVUMEH) to ensure public safety and provide timely warnings.
