Veristic Portraiture
Veristic portraiture is a style of portraiture that emphasizes realistic and detailed representations of subjects, often highlighting their age and imperfections. This approach was particularly popular in ancient Roman art, where artists aimed to capture the true likeness of individuals, reflecting their character and social status.
The term "veristic" comes from the Latin word "verus," meaning true or real. In these portraits, features such as wrinkles, sagging skin, and other signs of aging are intentionally included to convey wisdom and experience, contrasting with idealized representations found in other artistic traditions, such as Greek sculpture.
