V.O. Chidambaram Pillai was an Indian freedom fighter and a prominent leader in the Indian independence movement against British rule. Born on September 5, 1872, in Tirunelveli, he was known for his strong advocacy of swadeshi (self-reliance) and his efforts to promote Indian industries. He played a significant role in the Swadeshi Movement and was a key figure in the Indian National Congress. Pillai is best remembered for launching the first Indian-owned shipping service, the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company, in 1906.
