Urticaceae
The Urticaceae family, commonly known as the nettle family, includes a variety of flowering plants, many of which are characterized by their stinging hairs. This family consists of around 50 genera and over 700 species, including well-known plants like Urtica dioica (stinging nettle) and Boehmeria species. These plants are often found in temperate and tropical regions and can thrive in diverse habitats.
Members of the Urticaceae family are typically herbaceous or woody plants, and some are used for medicinal purposes or as food. The stinging hairs contain irritants that can cause a burning sensation upon contact with skin. Additionally, some species, like ramie (Boehmeria nivea), are cultivated for their fibers, which are used in textiles.
