Turkish Oil Wrestling
Turkish Oil Wrestling, known as Yağlı Güreş, is a traditional sport in Turkey that dates back centuries. Wrestlers, called pehlivans, compete while covered in olive oil, which adds a unique challenge to the match. The goal is to pin the opponent to the ground, showcasing strength, technique, and strategy.
The sport is often held during festivals, with the most famous event being the Kirkpinar Oil Wrestling Festival in Edirne. Wrestlers wear special leather pants called kispet, and the event attracts large crowds, celebrating both athleticism and cultural heritage.
