A tsunami is a series of large ocean waves typically caused by underwater earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, or landslides. When these seismic events displace a significant amount of water, they generate waves that can travel across entire ocean basins at high speeds, often reaching heights of over 100 feet when they approach coastal areas.
As the waves near land, they can grow in height and cause devastating flooding and destruction. Tsunamis can strike with little warning, making them particularly dangerous. Communities in coastal regions must be prepared and have evacuation plans in place to minimize loss of life during such events.
