Tsenacommacah
Tsenacommacah was the name used by the Powhatan Confederacy to describe their territory in what is now Virginia. This region was home to various Algonquian-speaking tribes and encompassed a diverse landscape of rivers, forests, and wetlands. The area was rich in resources, supporting a complex society with agriculture, fishing, and trade.
The term Tsenacommacah translates to "the land of the people" and reflects the interconnectedness of the tribes within the confederacy. The Powhatan leader, Chief Powhatan, played a significant role in the region's history during the early 17th century, particularly in relation to the arrival of English settlers at Jamestown.
