Tribune of the Plebs
The Tribune of the Plebs was an important political office in ancient Rome, established in 494 BCE. This position was created to represent the interests of the common people, known as the plebeians, against the ruling class, the patricians. Tribunes had the power to veto decisions made by the Senate and other magistrates, ensuring that the voices of the plebeians were heard.
Tribunes were elected by the plebeians and held significant influence in Roman politics. They could propose legislation and had the authority to protect individuals from unjust treatment. This role was crucial in the struggle for social and political equality in the Roman Republic.
