Tree Growth
Tree growth is a process that involves the increase in size and height of a tree over time. This growth occurs primarily through two mechanisms: cell division and cell enlargement. Trees absorb water and nutrients from the soil through their roots, which are then transported to the leaves. Here, photosynthesis takes place, converting sunlight into energy that fuels growth.
As trees grow, they develop new layers of bark and wood. The outer layer, called the cambium, is responsible for producing new cells. The growth rings visible in a tree's cross-section indicate its age and the conditions it experienced during each year of growth.
