Transgender History
Transgender history encompasses the experiences and identities of individuals whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. Throughout history, various cultures have recognized and accepted gender diversity, with examples such as the Two-Spirit people in many Indigenous cultures and the Hijra community in South Asia.
In the 20th century, the modern transgender rights movement began to gain momentum, particularly after the publication of Christine Jorgensen's story in the 1950s. This period saw increased visibility and advocacy for transgender rights, leading to significant legal and social changes, including the push for gender-affirming healthcare and anti-discrimination protections.
