Tolkappiyar
Tolkappiyar was an ancient Tamil scholar and poet, credited with authoring the Tolkappiyam, one of the earliest works on Tamil grammar and linguistics. His contributions laid the foundation for Tamil literature and language studies, influencing generations of poets and writers. The Tolkappiyam is divided into three sections: Ezhuthu (letters), Porul (meaning), and Ilakkanam (grammar), which systematically describe the rules of the Tamil language.
Tolkappiyar is often regarded as a pivotal figure in the Sangam literary tradition, which flourished in ancient Tamil Nadu. His work not only addresses grammar but also explores themes of love, ethics, and the natural world, reflecting the cultural and social values of his time. His influence continues to be felt in modern Tamil studies and literature.
