Timucuan
The Timucuan were a Native American people who lived in what is now northern Florida and southern Georgia. They spoke the Timucua language and were known for their agricultural practices, cultivating crops like corn, beans, and squash. The Timucuan society was organized into several chiefdoms, each led by a chief known as a cacique.
The arrival of European explorers in the 16th century significantly impacted the Timucuan. Diseases brought by the Europeans, along with conflicts and colonization efforts, led to a dramatic decline in their population. Today, the legacy of the Timucuan is preserved in various historical sites and cultural references in the region.
