Thyrohyoid Muscle
The thyrohyoid muscle is a small, flat muscle located in the neck. It connects the thyroid cartilage of the larynx to the hyoid bone, which is situated above the thyroid cartilage. This muscle plays a crucial role in the movement of the larynx and hyoid bone during swallowing and speaking.
Functionally, the thyrohyoid muscle helps to depress the hyoid bone and elevate the thyroid cartilage. It is innervated by the hypoglossal nerve (cranial nerve XII) and is considered part of the infrahyoid muscle group, which assists in various neck movements and stabilizes the position of the larynx.
