Sternohyoid Muscle
The sternohyoid muscle is a thin, strap-like muscle located in the neck. It originates from the sternum and the clavicle and inserts into the hyoid bone. This muscle plays a crucial role in lowering the hyoid bone and the larynx during swallowing and speaking.
As part of the infrahyoid muscle group, the sternohyoid helps stabilize the position of the hyoid bone, which is essential for proper function of the thyroid gland and the airway. It is innervated by the ansa cervicalis, a loop of nerves that contributes to neck muscle movement.
