The Walled City
The Walled City, also known as Kowloon Walled City, was a unique urban settlement in Hong Kong. Originally a military outpost, it became a densely populated area with little government oversight. By the 1960s and 1970s, it housed around 30,000 to 50,000 residents in a small space, leading to a complex network of buildings and narrow alleys.
The Walled City was known for its high population density and lack of formal infrastructure. It featured numerous small businesses, restaurants, and even schools, all operating in a self-regulated environment. In 1993, the city was demolished, and a park, Kowloon Walled City Park, was built in its place.
