Terrorism in Spain
Terrorism in Spain has been significantly influenced by the activities of the Basque separatist group ETA, which sought independence for the Basque Country. Founded in 1959, ETA was responsible for numerous attacks, including bombings and assassinations, leading to over 800 deaths until it declared a ceasefire in 2011 and officially disbanded in 2018.
In addition to ETA, Spain has faced threats from Islamist extremist groups. The most notable incident occurred on March 11, 2004, when coordinated train bombings in Madrid killed 191 people. Since then, Spain has strengthened its counter-terrorism measures to prevent further attacks and enhance national security.
