A Temporary Autonomous Zone (TAZ) is a concept introduced by the anarchist writer Hakim Bey. It refers to a space that is created for a limited time where individuals can experience freedom and autonomy, free from the constraints of mainstream society. TAZs often emerge in response to oppressive systems and can take various forms, such as festivals, art installations, or spontaneous gatherings.
These zones are characterized by their ephemeral nature, existing outside of traditional political and social structures. They aim to foster creativity, community, and self-expression, allowing participants to explore alternative ways of living and interacting. TAZs challenge the status quo and encourage a sense of liberation, even if only temporarily.
