Tanzania-Zambia Railway
The Tanzania-Zambia Railway (TAZARA) is a vital rail link connecting Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia. Completed in 1975, it spans approximately 1,860 kilometers and was built to facilitate trade and transport between the two countries, bypassing South Africa due to political tensions at the time.
TAZARA was a significant project supported by China, which provided funding and expertise. The railway plays a crucial role in transporting goods, including copper from Zambia and agricultural products from Tanzania, enhancing economic cooperation and regional development in southeastern Africa.
