Takotsubo cardiomyopathy
Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, often referred to as "broken heart syndrome," is a temporary heart condition that mimics a heart attack. It is usually triggered by extreme emotional or physical stress, leading to a sudden weakening of the heart muscle. This condition causes the heart's left ventricle to balloon, affecting its ability to pump blood effectively.
Symptoms of Takotsubo cardiomyopathy can include chest pain, shortness of breath, and irregular heartbeats. Diagnosis typically involves imaging tests like an echocardiogram or cardiac MRI to assess heart function. Most patients recover fully within weeks to months with appropriate care.
