TIMP-1
TIMP-1, or Tissue Inhibitor of Metalloproteinases-1, is a protein that plays a crucial role in regulating the activity of enzymes known as metalloproteinases. These enzymes are involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix components, which is important for tissue remodeling and repair. By inhibiting these enzymes, TIMP-1 helps maintain the balance between tissue formation and degradation.
TIMP-1 is produced by various cell types, including fibroblasts and endothelial cells. It is found in many tissues and is particularly important in processes like wound healing and inflammation. Abnormal levels of TIMP-1 have been associated with several diseases, including cancer and cardiovascular disorders.
