Synthetic Corks
Synthetic corks are artificial closures made from materials like plastic or rubber, designed to mimic the properties of natural cork. They are often used in wine bottles to provide a seal that prevents air from entering, which can spoil the wine. Synthetic corks are typically more uniform in size and shape compared to natural cork, making them easier to produce and use.
One advantage of synthetic corks is their resistance to cork taint, a problem caused by a compound called TCA found in natural cork. This taint can negatively affect the taste and aroma of wine. Additionally, synthetic corks can be recycled, making them a more environmentally friendly option compared to traditional corks harvested from cork oak trees.
