Synaptic Strength
Synaptic strength refers to the efficiency of communication between neurons at a synapse, the junction where two neurons connect. It determines how effectively one neuron can influence another, impacting processes like learning and memory. Stronger synapses can transmit signals more easily, while weaker ones may struggle to do so.
Changes in synaptic strength can occur through various mechanisms, including long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD). LTP enhances synaptic strength, often following repeated stimulation, while LTD reduces it. These processes are essential for adapting neural circuits in response to experiences and are fundamental to the functioning of the nervous system.
