Sri Lankan Independence
Sri Lanka gained its independence from British rule on February 4, 1948. This marked the end of over 130 years of colonial governance, during which the British controlled the island's administration and economy. The independence movement was fueled by various political leaders and groups advocating for self-rule, culminating in negotiations with the British government.
Following independence, Sri Lanka became a dominion within the British Commonwealth, allowing it to maintain ties with Britain while establishing its own government. The country was officially named the Dominion of Ceylon until it changed its name to Sri Lanka in 1972, reflecting its rich cultural heritage.
