Southern white rhinoceros
The Southern white rhinoceros is one of the largest species of rhinoceros, native to southern Africa. It has a broad mouth adapted for grazing on grass and can weigh up to 2,300 kilograms (5,000 pounds). This species is known for its two horns, which are made of keratin, the same material as human hair and nails.
Conservation efforts have helped the Southern white rhinoceros recover from near extinction in the 20th century. Today, it is classified as "Near Threatened" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Protected areas and wildlife reserves play a crucial role in ensuring its survival.
