Southern Yokuts
The Southern Yokuts are a Native American group originally from the central region of California, particularly around the San Joaquin Valley. They are part of the larger Yokuts people, who traditionally lived in various villages along rivers and lakes. Their culture is rich in traditions, including basket weaving and storytelling, and they relied on local resources for food, such as fish, acorns, and game.
Historically, the Southern Yokuts had a complex social structure and practiced various ceremonies. They spoke several dialects of the Yokuts language, which is part of the larger Penutian language family. Today, efforts are being made to preserve their cultural heritage and language, as well as to promote their history and rights.
