South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission
The South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was established in 1995 after the end of apartheid. Its primary goal was to address the human rights violations that occurred during this period, promoting national unity and healing. The TRC provided a platform for victims to share their experiences and for perpetrators to confess their crimes, often in exchange for amnesty.
Led by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the TRC conducted public hearings and documented testimonies from individuals affected by the violence and oppression of apartheid. The commission's findings were compiled in a final report, which aimed to foster understanding and reconciliation among South Africans.
