Soputan volcanic complex
The Soputan volcanic complex is an active volcano located on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia. It is part of the Sangihe Arc, a chain of volcanoes formed by the subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate beneath the Sunda Plate. Soputan has a history of eruptions, with its most recent significant activity occurring in 2021.
The complex features a stratovolcano, characterized by its steep slopes and layered structure of lava flows and ash deposits. Soputan is known for its explosive eruptions, which can produce ash plumes and pyroclastic flows, posing risks to nearby communities and air travel in the region.
