Sir John Suckling
Sir John Suckling (1609-1642) was an English poet and playwright known for his witty and elegant verse. He was a prominent figure in the Caroline era of English literature and is often associated with the Cavalier poets, who celebrated themes of love, beauty, and the pleasures of life. His most famous poem, "Why So Pale and Wan, Fond Lover?" reflects his skill in crafting light-hearted yet poignant poetry.
In addition to his poetry, Suckling was also a soldier and a gambler, known for his extravagant lifestyle. He was a supporter of King Charles I during the English Civil War, which ultimately led to his downfall. After the king's defeat, Suckling fled to France, where he died under mysterious circumstances.
