Seventy-First Amendment
The Seventy-First Amendment to the Constitution of India was enacted in 1992. It primarily aimed to enhance the representation of women in local governance by reserving one-third of the seats for women in the Panchayati Raj system, which is a form of rural local government. This amendment was a significant step towards promoting gender equality in political participation.
Additionally, the amendment also made provisions for the reservation of seats for women in the Municipalities. By ensuring that women have a greater voice in local decision-making, the Seventy-First Amendment sought to empower them and encourage their active involvement in the democratic process.
