Seventy-Second Amendment
The Seventy-Second Amendment to the Constitution of India was enacted in 1989. It primarily aimed to enhance the powers of the State Legislative Assemblies and improve the functioning of local self-governments. This amendment also addressed issues related to the representation of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in local bodies.
Additionally, the amendment introduced provisions for the reservation of seats for women in local self-governments, promoting gender equality in political representation. By doing so, it sought to empower marginalized communities and ensure their participation in the democratic process at the grassroots level.
