Secondary Traumatic Stress
Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS) occurs when individuals experience emotional distress due to exposure to the traumatic experiences of others. This condition is often seen in professionals such as first responders, therapists, and social workers who regularly engage with trauma survivors. Symptoms can include anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and emotional numbness.
Unlike Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which arises from direct trauma, STS results from vicarious exposure. It can lead to burnout and compassion fatigue, affecting the individual's ability to provide care and support. Recognizing and addressing STS is crucial for maintaining the well-being of those in caregiving roles.
