Second Māori War
The Second Māori War, also known as the New Zealand Wars, occurred between 1863 and 1866. It was primarily fought between the British colonial forces and various Māori tribes, particularly those in the Waikato region. The conflict arose from land disputes and the British government's desire to expand its territory in New Zealand.
The war began with the invasion of the Waikato region, leading to significant battles such as the Battle of Rangiriri and the Battle of Orakau. Ultimately, the conflict resulted in the defeat of the Māori forces and the confiscation of large areas of land, significantly impacting Māori communities and their way of life.
