Sattriya
Sattriya is a classical dance form originating from the northeastern state of Assam in India. It was developed by the saint-scholar Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev in the 15th century as a means to spread the teachings of Vaishnavism. This dance is characterized by its graceful movements, expressive gestures, and vibrant costumes, often performed by male and female dancers.
Traditionally, Sattriya is performed in monasteries called Sattras during religious festivals and rituals. The dance incorporates storytelling through dance and music, using traditional instruments like the dhol and khol. Sattriya has gained recognition as one of the eight classical dance forms of India, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Assam.
