Sarcoglycan
Sarcoglycan is a group of proteins that play a crucial role in maintaining the structural integrity of muscle cells. These proteins are part of the dystrophin-glycoprotein complex, which helps connect the muscle cell membrane to the underlying cytoskeleton. Mutations in sarcoglycan genes can lead to muscle disorders, particularly forms of muscular dystrophy.
There are several types of sarcoglycans, including alpha-sarcoglycan, beta-sarcoglycan, gamma-sarcoglycan, and delta-sarcoglycan. Each type is encoded by a different gene and has specific functions in muscle tissue. Deficiencies or abnormalities in these proteins can result in progressive muscle weakness and degeneration.
