Sangam literature
Sangam literature refers to a body of ancient Tamil texts composed between 300 BCE and 300 CE in southern India. It is named after the Sangam academies of poets and scholars that flourished in the region, particularly in Madurai. The literature is divided into two main categories: Ettuthokai (Eight Anthologies) and Pattupattu (Ten Songs), encompassing themes of love, valor, and nature.
The works of Sangam literature are notable for their rich imagery and emotional depth, reflecting the social and cultural life of the Tamil people. They provide insights into the early Tamil society, including its politics, economy, and relationships. This literature is considered a cornerstone of Tamil heritage and has influenced subsequent generations of writers and poets.
