Sandinistas
The term "Sandinistas" refers to members of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), a political party in Nicaragua. The FSLN emerged in the 1960s, aiming to overthrow the dictatorship of Anastasio Somoza and promote social justice and equality. In 1979, the Sandinistas successfully led a revolution that resulted in the Somoza regime's collapse.
After gaining power, the Sandinistas implemented various reforms, including land redistribution and literacy programs. However, their government faced opposition from the Contras, a rebel group funded by the United States, leading to a civil conflict throughout the 1980s. The Sandinistas remain a significant force in Nicaraguan politics today.
