Sacred Band of Thebes
The Sacred Band of Thebes was an elite military unit in ancient Greece, formed in the 4th century BCE. Composed of 150 pairs of male lovers, it was known for its exceptional bravery and loyalty. The band played a crucial role in several battles, notably at the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BCE, where they helped to defeat the Spartan forces.
This unit was unique in its structure, as the bonds between the soldiers were believed to enhance their fighting spirit. The Sacred Band was ultimately defeated by the Macedonian army at the Battle of Chaeronea in 338 BCE, marking the end of its prominence.
