SALT Treaties
The SALT Treaties, or Strategic Arms Limitation Talks, were negotiations between the United States and the Soviet Union aimed at curbing the arms race during the Cold War. The first treaty, known as SALT I, was signed in 1972 and focused on limiting the number of nuclear weapons and delivery systems each country could possess.
A follow-up agreement, SALT II, was signed in 1979 but was never ratified by the U.S. Senate due to rising tensions. Both treaties represented significant steps toward arms control, promoting dialogue and reducing the risk of nuclear conflict between the two superpowers.
