SALT I
The Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT I) were negotiations between the United States and the Soviet Union aimed at curbing the arms race during the Cold War. These talks began in 1969 and resulted in two key agreements: the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and the Interim Agreement on Offensive Arms. SALT I marked a significant step towards arms control and established a framework for future negotiations.
The Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty limited the deployment of missile defense systems, while the Interim Agreement placed restrictions on the number of strategic ballistic missile launchers. SALT I was a crucial moment in U.S.-Soviet Union relations, reflecting a mutual desire to reduce the risk of nuclear conflict.
