Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty
The Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) is a bilateral agreement between the United States and the Russian Federation aimed at reducing and limiting strategic offensive arms. Initially signed in 1991, it marked a significant step in nuclear disarmament, establishing limits on the number of deployed nuclear warheads and delivery systems.
The treaty has undergone several iterations, with the most recent version, known as New START, signed in 2010. This agreement continues to promote transparency and verification measures, ensuring both nations adhere to the established limits while fostering dialogue on nuclear security and arms control.
