Rutherford B. Hayes
Rutherford B. Hayes was the 19th President of the United States, serving from 1877 to 1881. He was born on October 4, 1822, in Delaware, Ohio. Before his presidency, Hayes was a lawyer and a Union general during the Civil War. He became known for his efforts to end Reconstruction and restore order in the South.
Hayes was elected in a highly contested election against Samuel J. Tilden, which was decided by a special electoral commission. His presidency focused on civil service reform and promoting education. After leaving office, he continued to advocate for social causes, including education and prison reform.
