Romberg test
The Romberg test is a neurological examination used to assess a person's balance and proprioception, which is the body's ability to sense its position in space. During the test, the individual stands with their feet together and eyes closed. The examiner observes for any swaying or loss of balance, which can indicate issues with the vestibular system, cerebellum, or sensory pathways.
This test is often performed in clinical settings to help diagnose conditions affecting balance, such as peripheral neuropathy or multiple sclerosis. A positive Romberg test, where the person sways significantly or falls, suggests a problem with the body's ability to maintain stability without visual input.
