Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers
The Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers was established in 1844 in Rochdale, England. It is recognized as the first successful cooperative society, created by a group of 28 weavers and other artisans. Their goal was to provide affordable, high-quality goods to their members, promoting the idea of mutual aid and shared ownership.
The society operated a store that sold basic necessities, such as food and clothing, directly to its members. This model laid the foundation for the modern cooperative movement, influencing many other societies and organizations worldwide, including the Cooperative Movement and Rochdale Principles.
