Cooperative Movement
The Cooperative Movement is a social and economic initiative that promotes the establishment of cooperatives—organizations owned and operated by their members. These cooperatives aim to meet the common needs of their members, such as access to goods, services, or employment, while fostering democratic decision-making and community involvement.
Originating in the early 19th century, the movement gained momentum with the establishment of the first successful cooperative, the Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers, in 1844. Today, cooperatives exist in various sectors, including agriculture, retail, and housing, and are guided by principles such as voluntary membership and equitable distribution of profits.
