Revolt of 1857
The Revolt of 1857, also known as the Indian Rebellion of 1857, was a major uprising against the British East India Company in India. It began in May 1857 when Indian soldiers, known as sepoys, revolted due to various grievances, including cultural insensitivity and harsh treatment. The rebellion spread quickly across northern and central India, involving both military and civilian participants.
The revolt was marked by significant events, such as the siege of Delhi and the capture of Kanpur. Although the uprising was ultimately suppressed by the British by 1858, it led to significant changes in British policy, including the dissolution of the East India Company and the establishment of direct British rule in India.
