Rectal Temperature
Rectal temperature is a method of measuring body temperature by inserting a thermometer into the rectum. This technique is often used for infants and young children, as it provides a more accurate reading of core body temperature compared to other methods, such as oral or axillary (armpit) measurements.
To take a rectal temperature, a digital thermometer is typically used for safety and ease. The thermometer is gently inserted about one inch into the rectum, and the reading is usually available within a minute. Normal rectal temperature ranges from 98.6°F to 100.4°F (37°C to 38°C).
