Project Ozma
Project Ozma was the first scientific effort to search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI). Initiated in 1960 by astronomer Frank Drake, the project aimed to detect radio signals from nearby stars, specifically Tau Ceti and Epsilon Eridani. Using the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia, Drake monitored these stars for any signs of intelligent life.
The project was named after the fictional character Princess Ozma from L. Frank Baum's "Oz" series, symbolizing the quest for knowledge and discovery. Although no signals were detected, Project Ozma laid the groundwork for future SETI initiatives and sparked interest in the search for life beyond Earth.
