Primary Appraisal
Primary Appraisal is a psychological process that occurs when an individual evaluates a situation to determine its significance. This assessment helps to identify whether an event is perceived as a threat, a challenge, or irrelevant. The outcome of this appraisal influences how a person will respond emotionally and behaviorally to the situation.
During Primary Appraisal, individuals consider factors such as potential harm, loss, or benefit. This initial evaluation sets the stage for further assessments, known as Secondary Appraisal, where individuals evaluate their resources and options for coping with the situation. Together, these appraisals shape emotional responses and coping strategies.
