Pressure Sores
Pressure sores, also known as bedsores or decubitus ulcers, are injuries to the skin and underlying tissue that occur when there is prolonged pressure on the skin. They commonly develop in areas where bones are close to the skin, such as the heels, elbows, and sacrum. These sores can range from mild redness to severe wounds that expose deeper layers of tissue.
Individuals who are immobile or have limited mobility, such as those in wheelchairs or confined to beds, are at higher risk for developing pressure sores. Preventive measures include regular repositioning, maintaining skin hygiene, and using specialized mattresses or cushions to relieve pressure. Early detection and treatment are crucial to prevent complications.
