Bedsores
Bedsores, also known as pressure ulcers or decubitus ulcers, are injuries to the skin and underlying tissue that occur when there is prolonged pressure on the skin. They commonly develop in areas where bones are close to the skin, such as the heels, elbows, and sacrum. Bedsores can affect anyone who is immobile for extended periods, including those in hospitals or nursing homes.
The severity of bedsores ranges from mild redness to deep wounds that can expose muscle or bone. Prevention involves regular repositioning, maintaining skin hygiene, and using specialized mattresses or cushions. Treatment may include cleaning the wound, applying dressings, and in severe cases, surgery may be necessary.
